Creating digital tours for museums and scanning artifacts

Bit Space was recently commissioned by CEDF to travel up North to capture photos and videos of two prominent museums. We thought it would be informative to share a behind-the-scenes look at our process and trip in it's entirety.

Traveling up North to capture unique content

Our latest adventure took us up north to photograph some of the most captivating museums in the region. As a small media company, we were eager to capture the beauty and history of these incredible institutions and share them with our audience. Throughout our trip, we visited the Heritage Museum in Thompson, the Mining Museum in Snow Lake, Communities Economic Development Fund, Pisew Falls, North Forge, and the University College of the North.

Visiting the Heritage North Museum in Thompson

Bit Space used our panoramic 360 cameras to capture the Heritage North Museum. This content is now being processed and turned into an interactive digital tour so that the museum can showcase their exhibits and history to anyone around the world, from the comfort of their own home.

Our cameras were constantly clicking as we captured the historic artifacts from the various exhibits. The staff were incredibly welcoming and informative, eager to share their knowledge and passion with us. We were particularly impressed by the museums large display of wildlife and Indigenous artifacts. By the end of our stay, we had amassed a treasure trove of stunning photos and videos that we were excited to render and share. Below is a behind-the-scenes look at how the Bit Space team worked on capturing the media. This experience was both informative and enjoyable, and our team is excited to finish putting together the Heritage Museums digital tour.

Capturing content for the Mining Museum in Snow Lake

We left early Thursday morning to Snow Lake to capture photos and video of the town's Mining Museum.  As a small media company, we were eager to capture the essence of this historic site and share it with our audience.

The museum is filled with heavy-duty mining equipment and fascinating artifacts in every corner. Our cameras were constantly clicking as we captured the intricate details and rich history of the mining industry. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, taking us on a journey through time as they shared the stories and legends of the miners who once toiled in the depths of the earth. Some of the exhibits included mock-ups of mining drifts, a mine rescue centre, and a vast collection of precious minerals and rocks.

By the end of our visit, we had amassed a treasure trove of stunning photos and videos. We are excited to share the digital tour of this museum, and we hope to return in the summer to capture the large mining machinery that was buried outside in the snow.

Observing the Pisew Falls in winter

After we finished capturing content at the Mining Museum in Snow Lake, we took a short detour to see Pisew Falls on our way back to Thompson. As outlined on Travel Manitoba, Pisew Falls is 13 meters high, and can be seen from the viewing platforms that are prefaced with a boardwalk that's a quick half kilometer in distance.  Although it was extremally cold, the falls were absolutely stunning and well worth the hike.

Seeing the rushing water of the waterfalls being surrounded by icicles was a unique opportunity to witness the stunning beauty of the falls in a snow-covered landscape. We captured these photos and videos below, as well as a 360 panoramic photo of Pisew Falls.

Touring the North Forge North facility

Back in Thompson, we visited North Forge for a tour of their facility. It was an exciting opportunity to explore the innovative world of modern manufacturing that is now available to the citizens of Thompson.

This state-of-the-art facility boasts an impressive array of high-tech equipment and cutting-edge technology. During our tour of the workshop, we were shown the intricacies of the production process and how North Forge is transforming ideas into reality. Shorty was warm and welcoming, eagerly sharing his expertise and passion. We marveled at the precision of the machinery and the skill of the technicians, who work tirelessly to create some of the most complex and sophisticated products on the market.

It was inspiring to see how North Forge is pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and we left the facility feeling inspired and energized. This was a great experience that gave us a glimpse into the future of how start-ups in Thompson can leverage existing machines and equipment for their businesses, and we can’t wait to see what North Forge will achieve next.

Exploring the University College of the North

To end our trip up North, we toured the leading post-secondary education institution in Thompson. The University College of the North has a mission of serving Northern communities and people with education, training, teaching, learning, and research while being inclusive and respectful of diverse Indigenous and Northern values.

From the moment we set foot on campus, we were struck by the vibrant energy and enthusiasm that permeated the air. We had the privilege of exploring the campus to view the different courses, rooms, and programs they have to offer. Our visit to UCN was an eye-opening experience that left us with a renewed sense of awe and admiration for the incredible work being done in Northern Manitoba academia today.
